Society with Music free essay sample

Dry. Dominique What does music mean to you? Do you think its changed from the different styles of music and the way that music sounds from when It started? Music can play a big part and role on society. There are many different types of music and music festivals in todays society. Music has changed a lot within the past few decades. Music festivals have pretty much stayed the same. People can be Judged on the type of music that they listen to as well as the way that they dress. In this essay I will insider how music relates too sociological theory, three social concepts, how music has changed, peoples clothing appearance, race in relation to music, TV In relation with music, different type of music magazines, the radio, and music festivals in society. There are three sociological perspectives or theories that we learned about. One of them Is the Functionalist perspective, another one Is Conflict perspective, and the last one is Interactions perspective. We will write a custom essay sample on Society with Music or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Functionalist perspective emphasizes the way in which the parts of a society are structured to maintain its debility. (Schaefer, 2011, Peg. 13). Conflict perspective assumes that social behavior is best understood in terms of tension between groups over power or the allocation of resources, including housing, money, access to services, and political representation. (Schaefer, 201 1, Peg. 14). Interactions perspective will examine sports on the micro level by focusing on how day-to-day social behavior is shaped by the distinctive norms, values, and demands of the world of sports. (Schaefer, 2011, Peg. 17).I think that music goes best the Interactions perspective theory even Hough it states its about sports because I think of it as just like interracial. In the book it states Despite class, racial, and religious differences, teammates may work together harmoniously and may even abandon previous stereotypes and prejudices. (Schaefer, 2011, Peg. 17). The way I see it the band could be like a team and the members are the teammates. The teammates (members) of the team (band) have to cooperate with each other. Even If they are a different race or a different religion. There are many deferent social concepts they we have learned I will talk about here of them and there relation with music In society. Independent variable Is one of them. Independent variable means The variable in a causal relationship that causes or influences a change in another variable. (Schaefer, 2011, Peg. 30). Artists can have a big impact on people In a society and can affect others and change the way that they act or speak. Self is another one. Self is A distinct identity that sets us apart from others. (Schaefer, 2011, Peg. 84).Some artists are making up their toys can express their self also. The last concept I will talk about is theory. Theory mean In sociology, a set of statements that seeks to explain problems, actions, or behavior. (Schaefer, 2011, Peg. 8). Artists can have an impact on their listeners even if the artist doesnt know it; it can change the listeners behavior the most towards certain objects or people. I will now talk about how music has changed overtime. Music has changed a lot in the past decades music has had a complete turnaround for varies type of music. There are so many sub-genres now to certain type of music rather than having a few genres that can classify a number of different types of genres. RB wasnt as popular until after the Civil Rights Movement and is now a very popular genre in todays society. Hip-Hop started off in the asss in the Bronx, New York and focused on emceeing, break beats, and house parties. Some of the popular Hip-Hop artists are; Public Enemy, OPAC, Notorious B. I. G. , Slick Rick, Salt N EPA, Busts Rhymes, and The Fugues. It has changed a lot from when it first started off. Hip-Hop is a very popular music genre in todays society. Hip-Hop today they are talking about blind, money, and hoes. People are always saying Hip-hop is dead because it has changed so such from what it used to be. Rock or Rock and Roll music probably has the most for sub-genres in todays music society; there are roughly about thirty different sub- genres to fall into it. Rock and Roll did not get its name until the sasss. Some of the popular Rock and Roll artists are; The Battles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Nirvana, and Grateful Dead.In an article it states Rock and roll appeared at a time when racial tensions in the United States were entering a new phase, with the beginnings of the rights movement for desegregation, leading to the Supreme Court ruling that abolished the policy of separate but equal in 1954, but leaving a policy which would be extremely difficult to enforce in parts of the United States. (H. Zinc, A peoples history of the United States: 1492-present (Pearson Education, 3rd edition, 2003), p. 450). For the most part Rock and Roll or Rock music has changed with all the different sub-genres we have now.Music change can affect the society because people like to act like their favorite artist and with the affect that how Hip-Hop has changed can be a big part with the society. I think music has changed so much with he new artists and they Just want to try out new forms of music and make new sounds or different style lyrics and it influences others to do the same so it diverts from how it started. There are many types of music in todays society that someone can listen to. People can be Judged by the way that they dress in multiple ways; music would be one way to Judge someone how they dress. If you look at someones music list you will start to Judge what their race is and the way that they dress. If you see somebody wearing all black and chains all over their pants you will tart to Judge that they listen to Heavy Metal music. If you see somebody wearing baggy clothes and pants sagging down below their waist you begin to think that they listen to Rap or Hip-Hop. If you see somebody dress in cowboy boots and other clothes considered as rednecks clothing you would be Judge that they listen to Country music. If you see somebody wearing Bob Marble clothing you would be ledge them for listening to Reggae music. People are Judged a lot in many ways by the way that they dress whether its their class, the type of music that they listen to, loud listen to any kind of music and they Just prefer a certain type of music more than other genres and choose to dress th at way. Race can play big role on stereotypes. People get Judged by their race for a lot of things, the type of music that they listen to would be one of them.People usually assume that Blacks listen to Rap, Hip/Hop, and Reggae, Whites listen to Rock, Metal, Country, and Pop, and Mexicans listen to Reagent, Salsa, and Cambium. In an article it states For all of metals globalization, metal is frequently associated with white, working-class men. This article focuses attention on the African-American minority within US metal scenes, drawing on a case study of the all-black thrash metal band Stone Vengeance, who while enjoying a primarily white male audience, formed their aesthetic in recognition, even celebration, of their blackness. (Fellers, Popular Music History; Paprika, Volt. 6 Issue 1/2, IPPP-197, app). Basically it is saying that most of the metal listening population is Whites. But there is a group of Blacks that like the music as Nell. This can go along with stereotyping Just because someone is a certain race isnt mean they have to listen too certain musical genre. No matter what your race is you allowed to listen to whatever music genre you like and makes you happy. TV use to play a good role with music also. MET use to show all the hot music ideas and information on artists.MET is supposed to stand for Music Television. Now they have all of these stupid shows like Teen Mom, dating shows, and reality shows. It changes the way that the youth to want to act like the people they see on TV like they see them as a role model. Its like people are beginning to lose touch Ninth music and its origins and how it began. The radio also plays a big role with music also. There are thousands of different stations broadcasted in the United States. Some of them play the hits of todays society, classic music, and certain types of genres. The radio stations that play the hits of todays society are a good way to keep up to date with the popular hits. The radio can help you along with finding a new song or artist you like. Some radio stations may tell you about new CDC coming out by certain artists. Some radio station may let you call in to request a song to play as well. The radio can relate to society to open up your taste for other music or new artists in certain genres. Clothing appearance seeing how your favorite artist dresses and can still able to keep up to date with the new songs that are out and CDC coming out Introit watching TV.Some well-known music magazines are; Billboard, Rolling Stone, Spin, Alternative Press, Vibe, and XSL. Free Essays on California Blackout

California Blackouts Beginning in the winter of 2000, California’s power supply has had a shortage leading to many blackouts across the state. Electricity cannot be stored; it has to be generated, transformed, and distributed to meet the exact demand. Therefore, a power shortage occurs when the demand is not immediately met. There are four main causes of the blackouts: restricted hydroelectric power, no new facilities, growing population, and price mitigation. First, California has been relying on Pacific Northwest power industries to supply the generation of power. Because of recent droughts in the area, reservoir levels are too low to keep up with the growing demand for electricity in California. They cannot generate enough power to be considered a reliable source. Hence, the hydroelectric power companies have breached their agreement to supply power. Second, since 1970 there have been no new nuclear power plants built. The reason is that there has been tremendous pressure from environmentalists to keep the area free of the nuclear power industry. In addition, there have been no new generators produced to keep up with the growing population. Third, the growing population has posed to be another source of the problem. There have been dramatic increases in computers, air conditioners, and entertainment systems. Also, there have been increases in energy intensive businesses. Fourth, power shortages have created an increase in demand for electricity. The price for electricity has now increased dramatically from five cents per KWH to over one dollar per KWH. However, the Public Utility Board has limited distributors to charge only seven cents per KWH. Due to these conditions, suppliers are in billion-dollar debt. The government needs to use its powers of the utility industry to aid California in its power shortages. Definition and Examples of Sentence Case

Definition and Examples of Sentence Case Sentence case is the conventional way of using capital letters in a sentence or capitalizing only the first word and any proper nouns. Do not capitalize the second word of a hyphenated compound.Librarians and bibliographers work with minimal capitals [i.e., sentence case], . . . yet [other options] are well established in literary tradition. For many people theres virtue in using [sentence case] in lists and bibliographies, but using one of the other options for titles quoted in the course of a written discussion. In major companies, the problem of consistency may be largely unreconcilable. Role Technology Has Played in Electronic and Digital Media Essay

Role Technology Has Played in Electronic and Digital Media - Essay Example In the past news was limited to a few persons obtaining print. It was later improved to electronic information by way of radio. Information that was very important and that would impact peoples lives reached them very slowly. In the current scenario things are different. There are many ways in which news can be had. It is available in print, on the radio, on television and on the internet and events are shown and reported as they happen (live). In addition, to its informational, reporting and critiquing role, one of the main roles of media is agenda setting. According to McCoombs and Shaw (1972), the media’s choice of how an article is displayed and what to write about play an important role in shaping economic, political and social reality. In this way viewers, listeners the readers will not only learn about a particular issue but also the level of importance that the media attaches to it. This means that the media presents information in such a way that it can shape the opin ions and attitudes of the society. By doing so the media dictates what is believed and what is not. Advances in technology The media has moved away from the use of chemical technology in photography to the use of digital technology. In the past the custom was black and white until color became widespread in the latter part of the 20th century. The chemical process involved the use of chemicals in a dark room. According to Warren (2001), the pictures produced by this method were not as sharp as those produced digitally. Additionally, those produced digitally could be copied over and over and the quality would remain intact. This was not so for the ones produced chemically. Mass media used this technology to produce attractive magazines and newspaper articles and to produce attractive advertisements for businesses. This helped them to increase their role as a key player in success of businesses. Media has used digitally technology to improve the images on television and in the print m edia. Technological advances have resulted in the digitization of news print which is now described as online media. Newspapers such as New York Times (NYT) and Washington Post (WP) have increased their readership because of this fact. Additionally, they have now included videos in some of their news items. This was not and is still not possible with print media. Both NYT and WP have also been able to earn additional revenue by having advertisements on their site. More hits bring more advertisements and so the headlines and articles have to be attractive. McCoombs and Shaw (1972), indicates that there are three ways in the media seeks to set its agenda – attention, prominence and valence. The technology that is currently been used allows news item to gain attention and prominence with the use of sharp pictures and pull outs. On the television and on the internet media provide catchy advertisements with music and visual effects as seen on the internet and on television. Televi sion also provides viewers with soap operas and movies that have changed the way they view the world. The internet has provided information at one’s fingertips for personal information and for serious research. Conclusion The media has played a fundamental role in how the world is seen today. People are more

Environmental Protection Agency Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Environmental Protection Agency - Assignment Example Following implementation of the Clinger-Cohen Act, the Agency did not revise procedures under Chapter 17 of the Information Resources Management (IRM) Policy Manual to have the Chief Information Officer evaluate information technology program performance (EPA Needs). There are still further problems that are brought to light in the report. First, the EPA should have dictated and required that the Chief Information Officer should have been monitoring the performance alongside the performance goals of the agency. Another problem that has come about because of the lack of monitoring is the fact that proper documentation was not utilized. This created further miscommunication: "Consequently, OEI did not know that System Sponsors did not require System Managers to completely document risks associated with system development" (EPA Needs). Therefore, there is no process of setting goals to monitor projects as they are completed, and this makes it difficult to implement any decision making strategies. In order to solve this problem, several key recommendations have been suggested in the memo. ... be made for the projects, and the agency needs to make sure that those concepts are placed into the documentation and then reviewed by the System Owners. The EPA agreed with the concepts suggested and began to take specific steps in order to resolve the issue. The EPA responded the way that it did because it understands that information technology, especially in today's increasingly technological world, is a very important part of a company's overall performance. In order to make sure the EPA continues to be successful, it does need to monitor its spending, and this is something that the EPA recognizes as a fault. Some items they have considered are as follows: "The Clinger-Cohen Act of 1996 (Public Law 104-106) and Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Circular A-130 both require agency chief information officers to oversee information technology investments" (EPA Needs). Further improvements included the need for projects to develop timetables and for System Managers to complete detailed paperwork that allowed for updates on system development, as well as reviewing the projects' effectiveness and cost. The System Sponsors must also make certain that they are agreeing with or rejecting decision papers (EPA Needs). The overall lesson to learn when reviewing this case is the fact that IT operations, with today's every-increasing world dependence on technology, are very important (Six Stigma). Not using or monitoring technology effectively can hurt a company's leadership, ability to complete projects, and cost the company excessive amounts of money. Therefore, it is very important to make sure that this information is streamlined, maintained, and monitored in order to make sure that the projects are successful. As the world is changing and technology

Teachers and bullying Essay Example for Free

Teachers and bullying Essay â€Å"Bullying poisons the educational environment and affects the learning of every child. †(Olweus) Some of the common effects of bullying on children include sadness, depression, poor body image and eating disorders, skipping school, bad grades, headaches, stomach aches, sleeping trouble, thoughts and even acts of suicide. The study also looked at relationship between empathy of the teacher and how they handled bullying incidents. Among the teachers who thought that the incidents were not serious or thought that the victims misperceived the situation, it was found that those teachers who felt empathy for a child at least tried to understand the child’s experiences and factors that shaped his or her behaviours. The teachers who did not show empathy did not try to understand the children. The research also cites two teachers who described some children as crying fake tears while describing their experiences. The teachers did not try to comprehend the children’s experiences or behaviours. They termed the children as provocative victims who exhibit that both the peers and adults find irritating. When such children report victimisation and bullying experience, the school personnel tend to be unsympathetic and ignores it. This strengthens the findings by researchers such as Craig et al (2000), Eslea and Smith (2000), Kallestad and Olweus (2003) that defies empathy as a key factor in how the teachers characterise and respond to bullying incidents and also how they implement anti-bullying programs. The research found that even when the individuals are able to articulate a clear definition of bullying, other factors can influence how they characterise and respond to the bullying situation. This can have an affect on the children if they perceive that sufficient action has not been taken by the teachers. Hence it would be beneficial to provide the teachers information on the factors that can influence individual’s decisions about what constitutes bullying and not. Indirect bullying was found to be the most challenging for the teachers to recognise as well as to know whether and how to intervene. Most often the teachers were unaware that children were bullied and did not consider the child’s case serious. This was also found by researches Craig et al (2000), Hazler et al (2001). Research by Siann et al (1993) found that teachers neglected to consider repetition in most of their definitions. The research found out that the assumption of the teacher about the characteristics displayed by the victims prevented them from recognizing the victimised children when they did not match the assumptions made. Researches conducted by O’Moore (2000) found that focussing on the individual characteristic of children who bully or who are victimised can minimise the awareness of factors such as social context and can obscure other factors that are central to the bullying such as the victimised child’s experience with distress due to the bullying activity. Researches conducted by Siann et al (1993) and Ireland and Ireland (2000) found that that subjectivity, especially when related to the indirect bullying can severely influence the intervention negatively. The teachers doubting the child’s view may contribute to the further lack of disclosure to the teachers. This was found to be intertwined with empathy shown by the teacher. Craig et al (2000), Kallestad and Olweus (2003) found the important relationship between empathy and how teachers responded to the bully victims. It was identified that the teachers require assistance to become cognizant of their attitudes also that their views may not correspond to the views of the children. This helps teachers to understand that sometimes the child’s distress may be greater than that anticipated by the teacher. According to Landau, Milich, Harris and Larson (2001), this understanding can increase the teacher’s ability to recognise and intervene in bullying situation. This assumes greater importance considering that the educators need to protect children who are victimised but who may not recognise or feel that they are being bullied. The research also found out that majority of the teachers was themselves subjected to bullying as children. According to the teachers, this personal experience influenced how they reacted to the bullying of their students. Kallestad and Olweus (2003) found an association between the teachers who identified as bullied as a child with the responses and interventions they participated in. However a study conducted by Nicolaides et al (2002) indicates that there is no strong influence of bullying during the childhood on the response of the teacher to bullying. Gibbons, Lichtenbert and van Beusekom (1994) found that it is necessary for the educators and other professionals need to deal with their own feelings that the incidents may evoke in order to respond effectively to the bullying situations. According to the research conducted by Boulton (1997, Craig et al (2000), Townsend-Wiggins (2001), training is essential for the teachers to increase the confidence and competence to respond to the bullying activities. It was found that most of the teachers had not received any training and expressed their desire to undertake this type of training. (Mishna, F. et al, 2005).

The Powerful Images of A Clean, Well-Lighted Place, By Hemingway :: A Clean Well-Lighted Place Essays

The Powerful Images of Hemingway's A Clean, Well-Lighted Place The main focus of "A Clean, Well-Lighted Place" is on the pain of old age suffered by a man that we meet in a cafe late one night. Hemingway contrasts light and dark to show the difference between this man and the young people around him, and uses his deafness as an image of his separation from the rest of the world. Near the end of the story, the author shows us the desperate emptiness of a life near finished without the fruit of its' labor, and the aggravation of the old man's restless mind that cannot find peace. Throughout this story stark images of desperation show the old man's life at a point when he has realized the futility of life and finds himself the lonely object of scorn. The most obvious image used by Hemingway in this story is that of the contrast between light and dark. The cafe is a "Clean, Well-Lighted Place". It is a refuge from the darkness of the night outside. Darkness is a symbol of fear and loneliness. The light symbolizes comfort and the company of others. There is hopelessness in the dark, while the light calms the nerves. Unfortunately for the old man, this light is an artificial one, and its peace is both temporary and incomplete. "... the tables were empty except where the old man sat in the shadow of the leaves of the tree that moved slightly in the wind." Maybe the old man hides in the shadows of the leaves because he recognizes the shortcoming of his refuge. Perhaps he is drawn to the shadows so that the darkness of his own age will not be so visible as it would be in the full force of the electric light. His body is dark with the effects of illness. Even his ears bring him a sort of darkness as they hold out the sounds of the world. The old man's deafness is also a powerful image used in the story. "...the old man liked to sit late because he was deaf and now at night it was quiet and he could feel the difference." Deafness shuts the old man out from the rest of the world. In the day, everything must be a reminder to him of his disconnection from the world.
